In November 2017, the Department of Panchayati Raj, Government of Jharkhand, partnered with The Art of Living’s Vyakti Vikas Kendra India Trust – Youth Leadership Training Programme wing – to enhance good governance parameters and ensure socio-economic empowerment in 60 Gram Panchayats in Jharkhand. The project aimed to create a replicable model of grass-root governance in 60 select Gram Panchayats as ‘Beacon Gram Panchayats’.
This affected approximately 350 revenue villages, impacting over 3.5 lakh people. Beacon GP initiative is a model for the social-economic empowerment of rural communities through effective governance changes at the ground level. The project was spread across 7 districts in Jharkhand – Ranchi, Bokaro, Saraikela Kharsawan, Palamu, Chatra, East Singhbhum, and Khunti. The project ran from November 2017 to March 2019.
“With the Beacon Gram Panchayat training, we realized we can help curb menaces like addiction in our villages. The situation of addiction was extremely bad in our area. Boys as young as 12 yrs had begun taking to addiction! Looking at the future of our children, we decided to take the onus upon us to improve this situation. Right now, we women have become much aware. We are united to get things done.”
